Past Portfolios
ANESCO LTD.
The aeos Group held a minority interest in Anesco Ltd., a leading developer and asset manager for solar parks and battery storage power plants. Anesco is based in Reading, United Kingdom, and operates in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany. Further information about Anesco is available at: www.anesco.com
In Germany, Anesco is active, among other entities, through the former subsidiary aeos energy. This company operates more than fifty photovoltaic installations for various investors in the solar energy sector. Its portfolio ranges from medium-sized rooftop installations to large ground-mounted installations with capacities of several megawatts.
AXESS NETWORKS
From 2018 to 2022, the aeos Group held a minority interest in Axess Networks, one of the leading international providers of satellite communications. The remaining shares were held by two financial investors and the management team. In 2022, the interest was sold to HispaSat, the Spanish communications satellite operator.
HURRIKAN POWER FUNDING HOLDING
In 2007, our former US partner acquired a German portfolio from the Dutch energy supplier Essent, comprising 65 MW of operational wind farms and 85 MW of development projects that had largely received approval. The acquiring entity was Hurrikan Power Funding Holding GmbH. Following completion of all construction projects in November 2009, Hurrikan operated a portfolio of 14 wind farms with a capacity exceeding 150 MW.
The portfolio also included an infrastructure company with a substantial substation and a development project with a capacity of 6 MW. In 2010, aeos energy sold three wind farms from the Hurrikan portfolio with a total capacity of 23.4 MW, followed by a further five wind farms with 54.5 MW in 2011, to an institutional investor, a municipal utility and a number of high-net-worth private investors. Following refinancing in 2012, aeos energy sold the remaining Hurrikan portfolio in individual transactions to high-net-worth private investors between late 2012 and late 2013. Part of the development project was sold at the end of 2013; aeos energy itself retains a substantial interest in it.
On behalf of our former US partner, aeos energy managed the business of Hurrikan Power Funding Holding GmbH, its wind farm companies and the infrastructure company. The operational component of our work included ongoing commercial and technical management of the existing wind farms, as well as monitoring construction progress on wind farm projects still under development from 2008 onwards.
The second principal component of our work was investment management on behalf of our former US partner. Acting as an extension of the investor's team, we undertook the following tasks:
– Preparation of investor reports and board meetings;
– preparation of bank reports and bank meetings;
– extensive involvement in refinancing the portfolio;
– sale of the portfolio in individual transactions to maximise the sale proceeds.
PETROTANK HOLDING GMBH
At the end of 2008, our former US partner and aeos energy acquired a substantial interest in Petrotank Holding GmbH, Bremerhaven. At the time of acquisition, Petrotank was Germany's largest tank storage company by number of locations, with Group revenue exceeding €100 million.
At the time, the Petrotank Group was also active in petroleum trading, marine bunkering, oil recycling and biofuels production and trading. aeos energy arranged the acquisition of the Petrotank Group and, on behalf of our US partner, managed the integration and investment controlling of Petrotank Holding GmbH.
aeos energy also provided Petrotank's interim commercial director for a period and supported the Petrotank Group in implementing its strategic acquisition projects. The interest in Petrotank was sold to Vitol in two stages between 2012 and late 2013. Vitol subsequently contributed the company to Varo Energy, a downstream joint venture between Vitol and the Carlyle Group.
BIOD FUELS INTERNATIONAL GMBH
BioD Fuels International GmbH operated a biodiesel production plant in Kaufungen near Kassel with an annual capacity of 50,000 tonnes. The plant was sold to KFS – Biodiesel Kassel GmbH & Co. KG in two stages between 2011 and 2013. BioD's shareholders were two US-based financial investors, for whom aeos energy assumed investment management responsibilities from 2011.
The production plant in Kaufungen uses a KOH esterification process: a closed, water-free process that generates extremely little waste. KFS Kassel produces biodiesel from vegetable oils and supplies biodiesel meeting DIN 14214 and the applicable seasonal specifications (CFPP and CP values). KFS – Biodiesel Kassel GmbH & Co. KG also offers customised biodiesel for clients in Germany and internationally.
